Renewals: You may qualify for mail-in renewal if your previous passport is undamaged and was issued within certain conditions. Expedited processing is available for urgent travel at an additional cost.

However, costs vary by type and processing speed. Categories include: Regular Passport Book, Passport Card, combined Book and Card, and Expedited Service. Official, Diplomatic, and Service passports may have different structures or exemptions. Always check the current fee schedule on the U.S. Department of State website.

In Summary

Unlike a Regular Passport, the Official, Diplomatic, and Service passports cannot be self-initiated. They require formal approval from your employing government agency before the application process can begin, because they are official instruments that represent the U.S. Government, not personal travel documents.

Your agency will verify that your travel is legitimate, confirm your employment status, and sponsor your application through the U.S. Department of State. For Official Passports, your federal agency handles this. For Diplomatic Passports, the Department of State controls eligibility directly. For Service Passports, your agency confirms the assignment and determines the appropriate document type.

Without agency approval, there is no independent application path and the application will not be processed. If you are a federal employee being sent abroad on official duty, your agency manages the process for you.
